Sump pumps and frozen discharge lines after a Twin Cities melt

Categories: Winter & freeze

Minneapolis walkouts in Plymouth, Maple Grove, and south Bloomington depend on a pit that nobody tested in January. The float sticks. The discharge freezes at the wall. March melt fills the pit and then the carpet. That is sump pump, not a bigger shop-vac.

We size the pump to the basin and add a check valve that does not slam. Battery backup is the conversation on houses that already flood. A sump is not a levee. Sheet flow from the street is civil.

Sump pump not running is the short checklist: power, float, discharge. If the pipe is a solid icicle at the rim joist, we thaw and re-pitch or add heat on that short run so next January is not a reprint of this post.

Fridley and Columbia Heights river-terrace lots make the same call after the Mississippi comes up. emergency plumber if the pit is already over the lid.

Cost is swap vs pit rebuild. A cracked basin is not a $200 pump. We quote on site. Minneapolis plumbing cost guide for ranges.
